It started as a small webcomic.
In 2020, Japanese illustrator Nagano began posting simple drawings to Twitter. No grand plan. Just a small white creature doing small things in a soft, strange world.
The name — Chiikawa — is short for "Nanka Chiisakute Kawaii Yatsu." Something small and cute.
On the surface: harmless kawaii mascots. Pastel colours. Round ears. Big teary eyes.
Underneath: something much more real.
The world of Chiikawa is quietly brutal. The characters take odd jobs just to survive. They fail certification exams — multiple times. They get anxious. They cry constantly. Strange monsters roam the edges of their world. Some creatures mutate. Some disappear. Nobody explains why.
That contrast is exactly why it blew up. Adorable mascots. Quiet suffering. Modern anxiety. It looked like a children's comic and felt like a mirror.
By 2025, Chiikawa had sold over 3.6 million copies, spawned a full anime series, and gone viral globally — because somewhere in that small crying creature, everyone saw a little bit of themselves.
In a world that looks like a dream and hides the weight of reality, there lives a small white creature named Chiikawa.
Nobody knows exactly what they are. Not a mouse. Not a cat. Not quite human. Just… small, and incredibly cute.

It's a world that is soft on the surface and strange underneath.
